One worker has succumbed to injuries after making unintentional electrical contact with overhead equipment on March 22.

While working for Dig Safe Inc., Barry Dale Robertson, 31, died on March 26 following an electrical incident in Ottawa’s southwest end, on Moodie Drive between Fallowfield Road and Cambrian Road.

The project’s constructor is Hydro Ottawa, the sub-contractors are Dig Safe Inc. and Greely Construction Inc.

“Our ministry was notified of injuries as a result of an electrical contact while they were preparing an augered hole for a hydro pole installation. The contact occurred as the workers were vacuuming debris from the hole,” explained William Lin, spokesperson for the Ontario Ministry of Labour.

Robertson was working with two Greely Construction Inc. workers who were treated at hospital and released. Robertson was listed in critical condition.

“All employees are deeply saddened and devastated by this loss,” said Nick Medeiros, Digsafe Inc. president in a release. “Barry will be missed by all. Our efforts are now focused on supporting the family and our employees, and on understanding exactly what occurred.”

Robertson is survived by partner Becky Markell, child Nevaeh, step-child Merika and his parents, Patricia and Garry Robertson.

Greely Construction Inc. operates as a Utilities Infrastructure Construction company and focuses on telecom, CATV, hydro and gas installations. Dig Safe Inc. is a group that provides hydro vacuum services and can locate subsurface utilities or structures in a minimally invasive and safe manner.

The Ministry of Labour is conducting an investigation and issued several work orders to the contractor and sub-contractors.

Among them, Dig Safe was issued a time order that vac truck #3 shall not be used until it has been determined that it is mechanically safe, including but not limited to hydraulic controls and tires. A stop work order was also issued to Dig Safe that vac truck #3 shall not be used until it is determined that it is safe to go into service.
